Browse, Search, and Embed (BSE) in LMS Video

• Easily reuse videos across all your courses - Theming

Instructors often use the same videos across multiple courses. This capability is now supported in the Theming-based Browse, Search, and Embed experience. Instructors can quickly find and publish videos not only from their own media and the current course, but also from any course media gallery they own. This saves time, reduces duplicate uploads, and helps instructors get more value from every piece of content. (KMS-30662)



• Make metadata mandatory - Theming

Previously, when users uploaded media through the Add New option in the BSE embed window, they could embed the content without completing metadata fields that were marked as required for publishing, such as tags, description, or custom metadata.

Starting with this version, embedding through BSE is now treated as a publishing action. This means users must fill in all required metadata fields before they can embed media. The Save and Embed button will remain disabled until all required information is provided.

This update applies to both Theming and non-Theming versions of BSE and ensures metadata requirements are consistently enforced across all upload flows.

Filter VOD entry analytics by playback context

You can now filter the entry (VOD) dashboard by playback context - the category or channel through which the media was accessed. This enhancement allows you to gain more granular insights into how your videos are being viewed within different course or group contexts. This feature respects user entitlements - users will only see categories they have access to.

A new way to Browse, search, and embed

We’re happy to introduce a new and revamped Browse, Search & Embed (BSE) experience as part of our phased rollout of the new LMS Video. This updated version offers a modern design and a more consistent user experience, and makes it easier and faster for admins and students to embed media in their LMS. 

Key improvements:

• A fresh new design: a cleaner, more modern look that feels simpler and more consistent across the platform.
• Customizable columns: Admins can now choose which fields appear in the BSE table (e.g., ID, Type, Tags, Plays, Views, Created At, and Updated At), offering greater flexibility.
• Preview before you embed: See what a video or audio file looks like before adding it to your LMS content.
• Podcast support: You can now embed audio files—including podcasts—directly from the BSE tool using Kaltura’s updated audio player (v7). It’s a great way to bring in more flexible, on-the-go learning options.

How to start using it:

You can enable the new BSE modal via the Theming module in your KAF Configuration Management console. Read more about the new BSE here.

This is an early release, giving you a first look at the new BSE experience. More enhancements and capabilities are on the way - stay tuned!

What's new?

Enhanced calendar invites – more customization, easier management

Managing calendar invites is now easier and more customizable for all invitations to meetings or sessions in the Kaltura Rooms, webcasts, Simulive, and VOD with an upcoming schedule. These updates ensure attendees receive the right information with improved clarity around event details.

• Edit invite title & location – Admins can now update the title and location in calendar invites sent after registration to provide accurate details.
• Send invites via email – Users can have calendar invites sent directly to their email instead of downloading them manually. Admins can enable this feature in the Configuration Management console. (KMS-30854)
• Customize invite text – Admins can modify the text in calendar invites that users receive when adding scheduled sessions to their calendars. (KMS-31028)
• New iCalendar module – Admins can now manage all the 'Add to calendar' settings in one centralized place within the video portal Configuration Management console.

• Seamless compatibility with Moodle 4.5

The updated Kaltura Moodle plugin now fully supports Moodle v4.5 (LTS), ensuring a smooth transition for institutions upgrading their LMS version. This update also maintains compatibility with Moodle 4.3 and 4.4.

New enhancements are available as part of this update:

More automated student activity tracking (ILMS-705)

• Instructors can now set a rule requiring students to submit an assignment before an activity is marked complete. Adding “Make a submission” as a requirement in Moodle’s activity settings improves tracking accuracy and reduces manual effort. This eliminates the need for instructors to manually check submissions before marking activities as complete.

  

Set reminders for video-based tasks

Students and instructors can now schedule reminders in Timeline for Kaltura Video Assignments and Video Resources, helping them stay on top of deadlines, improving time management, and reducing missed submissions.

Quick access to My Media (ILMS-707)

Admins can now add My Media to the user menu, giving students and instructors a direct shortcut to their personal video libraries. This update simplifies navigation, making it faster and more convenient to find and manage media.

• Easier video labeling with search in Theming

Adding custom tags and labels to videos helps improve discoverability, making content easier to find and use across relevant contexts. As metadata lists grow, selecting the right labels can become time-consuming. To streamline this process, we added a searchable dropdown for listType - Multi, allowing faster and more efficient metadata selection, especially for organizations managing large video collections:

• Interactive video embedding is supported in Player v7

Instructors and content creators can now embed interactive videos (AKA RAPT or Interactive Video Paths) in their Video Portal and LMS Video using Kaltura Player v7. This update enables seamless integration of decision-based learning experiences, making interactive content more accessible and engaging.

Video Portal (KMS)

The new Kaltura Room experience

The new Kaltura Room is now available in the Video Portal, with major enhancements over the legacy room (Newrow): A beautiful, modern interface for a more engaging user experience, advanced branding options; rich, powerful chat & collaboration tools, with quick polls, quizzes, survey questions, and a private backchannel chat for moderators; interlude templates (customizable transition videos with music and live countdown), and a private green room for speakers and admins to collaborate during breaks.

The Kaltura Room is unique in that it is a persistent room built for learning, offering special features like Storyboard (allowing instructors to prepare the session in advance, by uploading materials into the room and organizing them sequentially), whiteboards, Miro boards, breakout rooms, and more.

Adding the room to your video portal will allow you to train, upskill, and collaborate in real-time directly within your video platform, having recordings automatically ingested and curated, and creating a seamless, more secure user experience, eliminating the waste and risk of platform switching.

The new room has two modes: interactive (up to 25 on stage/100 total participants) and webinar (10 on stage/300 total participants).

Quiz analytics enhancements!

To improve support for larger user groups (over 500 participants), the quiz analytics feature has been enhanced with the following updates:

• New report available: A new report is now accessible, making it easier to handle and review data from a larger number of quiz submissions.
• Submissions ordered by 'last submitted': Quiz submissions are now automatically sorted based on the most recent submission, allowing for quicker tracking of recent activity.
• Improved user information flow: Accessing individual user details has been streamlined for a more efficient and intuitive experience when viewing quiz attempts and scores.

• Publish from upload - Users can now update the media publish status (private/ unlisted/ publish) directly from the upload page, simplifying the process and enhancing workflow efficiency. • Add support for Kaltura messaging service - We have added the latest Kaltura Messaging Service to KMS email sending capabilities (configured from the emailService module). This messaging service is based on SendGrid, and once enabled, can be applied to any registration emails, password recovery emails, or email invitations. (KMS-29222)
  With this update, KMS aligns with other Kaltura products already using his service, and future plans are to expand its use to include the notification services. Visit EmailService module for information.

• Secure embed - Support for third-party cookies - Authentication via Pop-up (Available in Video Portal) - To better support instances with IDPs that do not allow the auth page to be loaded in an iFrame, we've updated the flow for configuring autoRedirectIframe (set to “no” to open the auth in a new tab).
  
  Previously, this flow could break due to third-party cookies being blocked or incorrect referrer settings. With this update, authentication will now occur in a pop-up. This resolves both issues, ensuring that users with blocked third-party cookies can log in directly from the page where the embed is located. (KMS-30433)

• Template pages - Sessions component (available for Kaltura Events) - This new component for template pages allow event owners to show sessions from the channel’s agenda or from a dedicated playlist. This new component will allow event managers to place a list of sessions in the form of an agenda on their template pages, whether homepages, landing pages, or Coming Soon pages. Currently only available on custom Kaltura Events templates, it will be available to configure from Kaltura Events in the upcoming weeks. Learn more in the template page article.



• Media page speakers location - On the Theming-based media page, the speakers component will now show above the custom data. This will not affect any instances where custom metadata is not in use, and will provide better visibility of the speakers for instances where it does.  (KMS-29599)
• Gallery moderation and permissions - To enhance the gallery offering, we have cloned a few features from the channels to the galleries:
  • Gallery moderation - This allows admins to choose the default moderation status for newly created galleries, and to disable the ability to remove the moderation by gallery owners. (KMS-30179)
  • Creation of galleries - Admins can now choose what the roles are and who can create new sub-galleries. (KMS-30180)
• Session cards (available in Kaltura Events & Video Portal) - (Correction from previous release, this feature release was 5.138.x, and not the previous version.) The new Theming module session cards display scheduled sessions in different locations, such as the channel page, the template pages, and more. We have enhanced these cards in two ways:
  • The "Join Now" button will now update automatically when the event starts, without needing to refresh the page. Admins can also set a specific time before the event begins for the "Add to Calendar" button to automatically change to "Join Now," allowing users to join ahead of the start time.
  • Speaker information will now be visible directly on the session page, eliminating the need to navigate to the speaker’s profile. This applies to speaker icons on media pages as well, and users can view this information without logging in.

  

• AuthBroker Role Mapping - We have added to the AuthBroker module support for mapping of KMS roles based on multi values lookup in addition to the singular fields support that already exists. (KMS-30311)

• Accessibility - First batch of Core a11y fixes for Theming-based elements and pages have been released.

• New filter - External applications - Once enabled,Content owners using the new theming my-media (DS) can now filter by external applications in My-media, allowing them to see how their content is used in other applications. If you haven’t used this feature yet, you can enable it from the categories module (KMS-29374). This is particularly useful when you have multiple instances, such as a KMS video portal and a KAF integration in an LMS, enabling the customer to see where each media is used within all apps.

What's new?

• Publish - Previously, if a collaborator published your content in a channel or category you didn't have access rights to, you couldn't unpublish it. Now, as part of our theming-based publishing updates, you can unpublish your media from any category or channel.(KMS-26945) 
• Multiple homepages and a new landing page -This new feature in the navigation module allows admins to select a dedicated landing page for guests. Previously, guests would see either the login page or the same home page as all users, depending on the authentication settings. Now, you can create a specific page just for guests. For logged-in users, multiple homepages are available based on user groups. Different groups will see homepages tailored to their specific needs. See Navigation module fo more information. (KMS-28907).
• Channel Subscription - Admins can now choose to enable Channel Subscription by default for all channels from the Channelsubscription module. (KMS-29021)

• Navigation - new custom page navbar item - Admins are now able to connect the custom/template pages to the navbar and control the navbar item directly from the page itself using the page's published status. (KMS-28962) 
  
• Playlist + Document entry -  For administrators who choose to enable it, the playlist player can now show document entries. The player shows the link to the Video Portal where the document can be viewed outside of the playlist. (KMS-28646)
  
• Template pages analytics - A new field heroPlayerAnalytics in the templatepages module now allows administrators to disable the player analytics on the template pages hero banner. (Note that the default is 'off'.)  (KMS-28981)

What's new?

• Theming in KAF - Single Media & Media Gallery pages - Both KAF's 'Single Media' and 'Media Gallery' pages have been added to the Theming set, allowing administrators to set up their KAF/LMS with the theming-based capabilities. (ILMS-622) 
  In addition to the new visual appearance of the page, the media gallery comes with a new capability allowing admins and course owners to add a header on top of the page:

• Hostnames module - With the preparation for AuthBroker release, administrators can set up the site's mainSiteAlias directly from the hostnames module. (KMS-28958) This is to support advanced features such as KMS admin login using AuthBroker (KMS-28556)
• Player V7 - xAPI - The v7 player events are now also sent as part of the xAPI events. (KMS-28605)
• Template pages - Smart hero buttons are now available on the "Text & Counter" hero, allow page owners to show a "register" or "login" button only if registration is turned on or only if the 'coming soon' module allows access. (KMS-28771)
