V2 to V7 player redirect tool

About

Kaltura’s V2 to V7 Player Transition Tool helps you upgrade from V2 players to the more advanced V7 player. Instead of manually updating each embed, the tool automatically delivers the V7 player (defined by administrators) wherever a V2 player is requested.

This tool can be a powerful resource for handling player upgrades, serving as a backup for missed embeds or as a temporary solution while transitioning fully to V7. It’s a helpful option if you plan to upgrade immediately but need time to replace embeds later.

Important note

This tool is supplemental, meaning it may not catch all V2 embeds. In some cases, you might still need to manually replace certain embeds. Kaltura recommends using our player replacement tool whenever possible to ensure full functionality across your setup. Testing

 Due to variations in different environments, testing is essential. Some V2 players may not transition smoothly and could require manual adjustments. We provide a Chrome extension that allows you to simulate the redirect in preview mode. This enables you to see how the V7 player will look and function, ensuring compatibility, including support for custom API calls and plugins before enabling the redirection all users.

Prerequisites

• Create V7 Players - Set up one or more V7 players that your V2 players will redirect to. You can even redirect multiple V2 players to a single V7 player. For guidance, visit our article Create a player.
• Install the 'Kaltura V2 to V7 preview' extension - The extension allows you to test the redirect before making it live. Click here to download.

Access the tool

1. Log into your Kaltura Management Console.
2. Click the Studio tab.



The Player Studio page displays. 

3. Click the V2 to V7 Transition tool tab.

On the left of the page, you’ll see a list of all your V2 players that are configured on the account and each player's ID.

Configure redirection

1. To the right of the desired V2 player, click Configure.



2. A Configure redirection window displays.



3. Select the corresponding V7 player from the Redirect to drop-down list.



If you want to transfer supported plugins, check the Include Plugins box. 



The 'Include plugins' option is supported only for iframe embeds.

When checking the 'Include plugins' box, the tool will automatically attempt to translate V2 plugins added to the iframe embed code into their V7 equivalents (for a list of supported plugins, see below).

If a plugin cannot be matched, the tool will revert to the V2 player. To avoid this, manually configure the plugins in your V7 player and leave the 'Include plugins' option unchecked.

4. Click Save.



A confirmation message displays: The configuration was successfully updated. (If you haven't yet downloaded the preview extension you can click the link download here to get it.)



5. Click Got it to continue.

Test with preview extension

After configuring the V7 player redirection, it’s a good idea to test it using the Kaltura V2 to V7 preview extension. With the extension installed, you can view your pages as if the V7 player redirection is active, allowing you to check player functionality, plugins, and custom API calls.

Once you’ve confirmed that everything works smoothly, you can proceed with the next steps to apply the redirection confidently.

Apply and manage redirection

1. Once you’ve tested the redirect and are satisfied with the results, click Apply redirection for that player. 



An Apply redirection confirmation window displays: Redirect [V2 player name] to [V7 player name]. This action will redirect all users of [V2 player name].



2. Click Apply redirection to continue.



This will activate the redirection for all V2 player embeds to the selected V7 player.

Due to player caching at the CDN level, changes may take up to 10 minutes to be reflected.

If you would like to cancel the redirect action, click the Stop redirection button.



A confirmation window displays.



3. Click Stop redirection to cancel the action.



A confirmation message displays: The configuration was successfully updated.  



4. Click Got it to continue.

The redirection is suspended to all users.

The tool supports automatic translation of certain plugins to their V7 equivalents. Here’s a list of supported plugins:

Things to keep in mind

• Flash Vars will be automatically applied where supported.
• V2 API calls will be translated to V7 equivalents where possible, but you should test custom API calls in preview mode.
• Some configurations or embed parameters may prevent the redirect from functioning properly. Testing is crucial to ensure smooth transitions.
