About

The Kaltura video editor is a simple tool for editing videos uploaded to Kaltura. It's especially useful for refining Zoom recordings, presentations, lectures, and Kaltura Capture recordings.

With the video editor, you can:

• Trim the beginning or end of a video
• Create clips from an existing video
• Remove sections from the middle of a video
• Add fade-in and fade-out effects

Launch the editor

The steps for launching the video editor vary by Kaltura application. For instructions, see How to launch the video editor.

Editor window layout

The editor has three main areas:

Left pane

Displays your media details. You can minimize it by clicking the open / close button (1)

Right pane

Includes:

• preview player (2)
• time field (3)
• playback controls (4)

Bottom pane

Contains the timeline and editing tools, including:

• total video duration (5)
• delete segment (6)
• fade effects (7)
• real-time marker (8)
• handlebars (9)
•  reset (10)
• redo/undo (11)
• show/hide audio tracks (12)
• zoom (13)

The real-time marker (8) includes:

• Split (scissors icon) allows you to cut the video at the point where the real-time marker is placed.
• Set In / Set Out lets you crop your video from the start or end.

When using the zoom function (13), a scroll bar is introduced underneath which you can use to scroll through your video, as shown in the image below:

Trim a video

Trimming permanently removes content from the beginning or end of the original media.

1. Set the start and end times using any of the methods listed below:

Use the zoom function to enhance display granularity. Adjust the segment's length with the handlebars to set the exact points you want.

2. Click on the timeline to activate the handlebars, then drag the handlebars to the start and / or end point with your mouse.



3. Enter a start or end time in the time  field, and then press enter. The marker will position itself at that time. You can then click set in / set out.



4. Move the marker to the desired position. Drag the handlebars to snap to the marker.



5. Play the recording, and pause at the desired time. The marker automatically positions itself at that time.
6. Drag the handlebars to the marker or click Set In or Set Out.
7. Click Save.

Saving permanently changes the original media. Removed content can't be recovered.

A confirmation message displays.

8. Click Save to continue.

Saving may take some time, especially for longer videos. You can leave the browser window or tab open and check back later.

Your edited video is saved as a new media entry.

Create a clip

Creating a clip generates a new media entry while keeping the original unchanged.

1. Set the range using any of the methods described above.
Preview your edits by clicking the play button below the video.
2. Click Save a Copy to create the clip (the original media is unchanged).
The 'Save a copy of the media' window displays.

Enter a title or keep the suggested title.



3. Click Create.
A success message displays.
4. Click OK.

The clip is saved as a new media entry.

Remove a section 

Removing a section cuts part of a video and automatically joins the remaining segments together.

1. Move the real-time marker to the start of the section you want to remove.
2. Click the scissors icon.
3. Move the marker to the end of the section and click the scissors icon again.
4. Click the section you want to remove.
The selected segment is highlighted.
5. Click the trash icon or press Delete.
The segment is removed and the remaining content is automatically joined together.

Add fade effects

1. Click on the segment you want to apply a fade effect to.
2. Click the fade in / out icon and enter the fade duration in seconds.
3. Click outside the window or press enter.



Fade markers appear on the segment to indicate where the fade begins.  

Work with multiple streams

When the editor displays content with multiple streams (for example, both screen and video capture), the timeline is loaded with the primary stream. 

You can change the content displayed in the player using the screen selection controls. Changing the display doesn't affect the timeline.

1. Click the Content Selector icon under the play button and choose the stream you want to work with. 



The selected stream displays on the timeline.

2. Set the range using any of the methods described above.
3. Click Save or Save a Copy.

Work with multiple audio tracks

The timeline can display up to eight audio tracks simultaneously. 

1. Click the audio icon and select the audio tracks you want to display. 



The selected tracks appear on the timeline in different colors.



Use the audio levels to identify appropriate trim or clip points.

Switch between audio tracks as needed to verify alignment.

2. Click Save or Save a Copy.
The edited media is saved as a new media entry.

Exit the editor

Close the editor using the available close control in your application.

• In Content Hubs, click the exit arrow in the lower-left corner.
• In the Rich Media CMS, click the X in the upper-left corner.

Keyboard shortcuts

For precise adjustments on the timeline, use these keyboard shortcuts:

• Right arrow: 1 second forward
• Left arrow: 1 second backward
• Alt + Right arrow: 10 seconds forward
• Alt + Left arrow: 10 seconds backward
