About
The Browse, Search, and Embed (BSE) tool lets you search My Media, Media Gallery, Shared Repository, and playlists, then embed media directly in rich-text areas like Announcements, Discussions, Assignments, and other content items in Blackboard - no training required.
Key features of the BSE tool
- Embed single videos, playlists, or entire Media Galleries.
- Upload videos directly from My Media to a course or lesson.
- Automatically integrate video quiz results into the Blackboard Grade Center.
This article applies to the BSE v3 non-theming-based experience. If your institution uses theming, see Embed Kaltura media - Theming.
The Browse, Search, and Embed tool is set up by your system administrator in the browseandembed module.
Embed Kaltura media in Blackboard
- In your Blackboard course, click on an item where you want to embed your media (for example, an Announcement, Discussion, or Assignment). In our example, we’re creating an Assignment.
- In the panel that opens on the right, select Assignment.
- Type in the assignment name and then type the assignment instructions into the text box.
- In the text editor, click the + button and select Content Market from the dop-down menu.
- Click the Embed button next to the media you want to insert. If you want to upload or create new media, see Add new media below.
- You can edit the display name if desired, then click Insert.
- Click Save.
The new assignment page opens.
In the Content Market, select the Kaltura embed tool. The name of the tool in your organization may differ from what appears in the image.
The Embed Kaltura Media window opens.
If you see a gear icon next to the Embed button, that means you can modify the video's settings before embedding it. See Customize your video settings below.
The 'Insert Content Market Item' window displays.
The video is embedded in the Blackboard editor.
Add new media
Want to upload something new instead of choosing an existing video? Use the 'Add New' button to upload, record, or link to new media directly from your My Media page.
1. In the Embed Kaltura Media window (when you get to step 6 above), click the Add New button at the far right.
2. Select one of the following options:
- Media upload - For instructions, visit our article Upload media.
- Express Capture - For instructions, visit our article Create a recording with Express Capture.
- YouTube - For instructions, visit our article Add a YouTube video in Blackboard.
- Video Quiz - For instructions, visit our article Upload media.
After the upload is complete, you can click the settings icon to adjust embed settings (if available), then click Save and Embed.
Customize your video settings
To customize your video before submitting, click the settings icon next to the media you want to embed.
1. Choose from the available options:
- Choose player: Select from pre-configured players defined by your administrator.
- Max embed size: Set the maximum display size for the video. The default size in Blackboard is 1200x720, but you can adjust this to fit your page layout.
- Thumbnail embed: Display a static preview image instead of loading the full video player immediately.
- Save these settings as default: Apply the same embed settings automatically to future media.
2. If embedding media as an assignment, enable the Submit as Assignment toggle.
3. Click Embed at the top-right corner.
Your video will appear in the Blackboard editor.
