About
The Categories module defines the root category used by your Kaltura application and controls how media from this and other connected Kaltura applications is surfaced to users.
In Video Portal, categories appear to users as galleries in the site's navigation menu.
In LMS Video integrations, categories are used behind the scenes to support features such as Media Galleries and shared repositories.
Before you start
Before configuring this module, you must create the required categories in the Kaltura Management Console (KMC). See our article Create categories in KMC.
Configure
1. Go to your Configuration Management console and click the Categories module. You can also navigate to it directly using a link: https://{your_site_URL}/admin/config/tab/categories.

The 'Categories' page displays.

2. Configure the following:
- rootCategory - Click Select Category.
- Start typing the category name, and select the root category you created in the KMC.
- Click Submit.

The root category should not be changed after initial configuration. You may rename the category in the KMC — the change will automatically reflect in KAF.
External applications (optional)
These settings are used when media from other Kaltura applications (for example, another Video Portal or LMS instance) should be visible to users.
showExternalPublish - Set to 'Yes' to show categories from external applications.
showExternalAppsInSearch - Set to 'Yes' to add the option to filter by applications in the My Media filters (Theming only)
Add external applications
Set the fields in this section for each external application you want to add.
If you have multiple LMS integrations or Video Portal instances connected to the same KAF environment, you can use this section to surface media published in those external applications. For more information, see External applications overview.
- Click +AddexternalApplications.
- Configure the fields:
Additional fields appear.

- applicationName - Select the display name for this application. Users will see this name in My media.
- applicationRootCategory - The Select category window opens. Start typing the category name, and select the root category you created in the KMC.
- type - Select one of the drop-down options: MediaSpace (also known as Video Portal), KAF application or Other.

You can repeat the steps to configure multiple external applications.
Restrict categories by role (optional)
You can limit access to specific categories so that only selected roles can view media within them.
Only users with the adminRole or unmoderatedAdminRole can add media to the restricted category.
- Click +Add "restricted".
- Complete the fields:
Additional fields appear.

- category - Select the category to restrict.
- roles - Select one or more roles that can access the restricted category.
You can set restrictions on multiple categories.
Assigning anonymousRole only applies if anonymous access has been enabled globally in the Auth module
3. Click Save.
