Trending and other dynamic playlists in Content Hubs

About

Dynamic playlists fill themselves from the media on your site, so you don't have to build them or keep them up to date. They're a quick way to show what's new, what people are watching, or what each person watched last.

You add a dynamic playlist to a template page, such as your homepage, by selecting its type in a playlist component. In Content Hubs and the legacy Video Portal, the playlist types and the rules for what appears in them are the same.

Dynamic playlist types

Select one of the following types in the type field of the playlist component:

Type What it shows
Most Recent All published videos in the channel or categories, by creation date.
Most Viewed All published videos in the channel or categories, by number of plays.
Most Liked All published videos in the channel or categories, by number of likes.
Trending Now The most played media in the last 24–48 hours.
Trending this week The most played media in the last seven days.
Trending this month The most played media in the last 30 days.
Recently Watched The viewing history of each individual user.
Continue Watching The videos that each individual user started and hasn't finished.

To add a dynamic playlist to a page, see Configure components for template pages.

How Trending playlists work

  • Media is ranked by the number of plays during the time period. Only plays inside that period count. A video with many plays overall can rank low if most of them happened earlier.
  • The date a video was created doesn't affect whether it appears.
  • Trending playlists aren't personalized. Every user sees the same ranking, except that users see only the media they're allowed to view.
  • The playlist shows only the media that qualifies. If there's less media than the number of thumbnails, the empty spaces stay empty.
  • Trending playlists aren't saved as playlists, so they don't have a playlist ID. You can't embed them on another site.

Media requirements

To appear in a Trending playlist, media must meet all of the following:

  • It's published in a channel or category on your site.
  • Its status is Ready.
  • It isn't pending or rejected in moderation.
  • It's within its scheduling dates, if you set any.
  • It's a video or a YouTube video. Quizzes aren't included.
  • It isn't hidden or in the recycle bin.

If a video you expect doesn't appear, check that it meets these requirements. Then check that most of its plays happened inside the time period of the playlist.
