Create a video assignment in Brightspace

About

Kaltura media assignments ensure the integrity of student submissions by preventing edits or deletions after submission. When a student submits a video, Kaltura clones it under a new username (OriginalUserName_assignment), ensuring the original remains unchanged. This prevents students from modifying or replacing their submission after the deadline.

The submitted video will not appear in My Media.

This feature is enabled and configured in the Browseandembed module.

Create a media assignment

  1. On the Brightspace homepage, locate your course in one of the following ways:
    • Select the course tile under the My Courses widget.
    • Click the Course Selector grid  and select the course from the drop-down menu. If you are enrolled in more than 20 courses, you can search for the course name using the search bar.
  2. Create your assignment, and from the editor toolbar, select the Insert stuff icon.
  3. In the Insert Stuff window, scroll down and select the Kaltura option (this may be labeled differently at your institution, such as 'Kaltura Media' or another custom name).
  4. The embed window opens.
  5. Select the Embed button next to the media you want to embed. You can also use the search bar and filters to quickly find the media you need.
  6. If you would like to upload or create new media, see Add new media below.

If you see a gear icon next to the Embed button, that means you can modify the video's settings before embedding it. See Customize your video settings below.

After selecting Embed, a window will display allowing you to preview the video selected.

  7. Click Insert.
  8. Your video will now appear in the editor.

  9. Select Update below the editor to save your changes.

Add new media

Need to upload or record a new video? Use one of the options in the Add New menu:

Customize your video settings

To customize your video before submitting, click the settings icon next to the media you want to embed.

1. Choose from the available options:

  • Choose player: Choose from pre-configured players. Your administrator defines the available players.
  • Max embed size: Set the maximum display size of the embedded video. The default size in Canvas is 1200x720, but you can adjust it to fit your layout and design preferences.
  • Thumbnail embed: Display a static preview image instead of loading the full video player immediately. This helps improve page load speed and gives users control over when to play the video.
  • Save these settings as default: Enable this option to apply your selected embed settings automatically to future media embeds, streamlining the process for repeated use.

2. Enable the Submit as Assignment toggle button to embed the media as an assignment.

3. Click Embed at the top-right corner.

Your video will appear in the assignment text editor.
