Create a video quiz assignment in Brightspace

About

This guide explains how to add a Kaltura Video Quiz to your Brightspace course so that student scores are automatically recorded in the gradebook.

There are two ways to add a Kaltura Video Quiz in Brightspace:

Method 1: Add as a standalone activity - This option adds the quiz as its own topic in a module using the Add existing activities option. The grade item is created automatically and you can adjust the points before students start.

Method 2: Embed using 'Insert Stuff' - This option lets you place the quiz inside a page, announcement, or anywhere there’s a text editor with the Insert Stuff button. This is useful if you want to add extra instructions or context. The grade item is created automatically, but only after the first student submits the quiz.

Each method works well - choose the one that best fits where you want students to access the quiz and how you’d like it to appear in your course.

Method 1: Add your assignment as a standalone activity

  1. Create a video quiz in your My Media. (See Kaltura Video Quiz in Brightspace to learn how.)
  2. Go to your course.
  3. Open the Existing Activities drop-down and select the Kaltura option (the exact name may vary, for example, 'Insert Media from Kaltura').
  4. Once your Kaltura media opens, find the quiz you want to insert and click Embed.

Your media will now appear as a topic item (link) in your module or submodule.

    Connect it to the gradebook

    1. Click the assignment title.
    2. Scroll down to the Assessment section.
    3. Create a new grade item or link it to an existing one.

    Check it's in the gradebook

    1. Click the Grades tab.
    2. Click Manage grades.

Under the Association column, you'll see External Learning Tool which this means your Kaltura video quiz is properly linked through the Kaltura integration. Once students complete the quiz, their scores will sync automatically.

Method 2: Embed your video quiz using 'Insert Stuff'

If you’d rather embed your Kaltura Interactive Video Quiz inside a page, announcement, or anywhere there’s a text editor, you can use the Insert Stuff option. This is handy if you want to add instructions or extra context around the quiz.

When you use Insert Stuff, the grade item is created automatically after the first student submits the quiz.

  1. Open any area in Brightspace that has a text editor, for example, click the New dop-down menu and select Create a File, or inside an announcement or assignment description.
  2. Add a title and body text if desired, then in the editor toolbar, click the Insert stuff icon.
  3. In the Insert Stuff window, scroll down and select the Kaltura option (the name may vary at your institution, for example, 'Kaltura Media - Insert Stuff').
  4. Once your Kaltura media library opens, find the quiz you want to insert and click Embed.
  5. A preview window appears.

  6. Click Insert. The video is added to the editor.
  7. Click Save and Close.
  8. The grade item will appear in your gradebook after the first student submits their quiz.
