Create a video assignment in Canvas

About

Instructors can create assignments in Canvas that allow students to submit video recordings using Kaltura’s Embed Media tool. When a student submits a video, it is cloned under a new username (OriginalUserName_assignment) and will no longer appear in My Media, ensuring that the submission cannot be edited or deleted after submission.

This feature is enabled and configured in the Browseandembed module.

Create a new assignment

  1. In your course, click +Assignment in the top-right corner.
  2. The text editor opens.

  3. Enter the assignment title and instructions in the text editor.
  4. Consider including a link to How to submit a video assignment in Canvas to guide students through the submission process.

  5. Scroll down to Submission Type, and select Online and then check Text Entry. to enable the Embed Kaltura Media tool for students.
  6. (Optional) Set Due Date, Points, and Rubric as needed.
  7. Click Save to store your assignment settings.
  8. When you're ready for students to submit, click Publish in the upper-right corner.
  9. The button will turn green and display Published, confirming that the assignment is now visible to students.

If students experience submission issues, ensure the Text Entry submission type is enabled in the assignment settings.

If your institution uses Kaltura's LTI 1.3 integration, confirm that student permissions allow them to upload and submit videos.

Canvas limits media embedding and publishing to the first 100 active courses due to system performance optimizations (per_page=100). If you don’t see a course in the selection list, it may be outside this limit.
