Introduction to Kaltura's player settings

About

This article gives an overview of the player configuration areas in the Player Studio. From here, admins fine-tune playback, appearance, third-party integrations, and advanced behavior for each player type.

With a wide range of options, you can shape the player to match your brand, accessibility standards, and workflow - everything from captions and CTAs to casting, analytics, and custom CSS - so it works exactly the way you want.

The settings you see depend on the player you’re editing (VOD, audio, or Reels).

For individual guides per setting, see the Player settings category.

Access the settings

1. Log into the KMC and click the Studio tab.

2. From the list, choose the player you want to customize.

The settings page displays.

Open the tab you need: Settings (opens first by default), Visual, or Integrations.

Settings tabs at a glance

Settings tab

Organized into three sections:

  • Playback options* - How media starts and plays (e.g., autoplay, start muted, preload) and player-specific playback features for Audio and Reels.
  • Capabilities - Viewer features such as captions, transcript, sharing, moderation, CTAs, playlists, related videos, navigation, accessibility tools, and more.
  • General - Overall behavior such as localization, default player ratio, user preferences, mobile screen orientation, version control (stay on latest version), and a link to Advanced settings.

*Playback options vary depending on the type of player.

Visual tab

Controls the look and feel of the player, including theme (where applicable), player and live colors, background, external CSS, logo, watermark, error slate, and bumpers. See our article Visual settings in player for more information.

Integrations tab

Connects the player to third-party services, such as YouTube playback, AirPlay and Chromecast, SEO enhancements, analytics platforms (e.g., Youbora, Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics), and monetization via IMA/IMA DAI. See our article Integration settings in player for more information.

Advanced settings

On the main Settings tab, scroll to the bottom and click Advanced settings to open the JSON editor. Use it for configuration that isn’t available in the main UI, such as in-browser fullscreen on iOS, seek-bar thumbnails, default volume and playback rates, default audio language, Safari quality menu, custom text and error messages, VR tagging, caption text styles, and more.

See our article Advanced settings in player for more information.

Player types

The settings you see depend on the player you’re customizing (VOD, audio, or Reels). The following tags are used in the player settings articles to show which players support a feature:

Tag Player
VOD VOD player
Audio Audio player
Reels Reels player

Preview your player

You can preview your changes as you configure the player. You can also change the preview media by clicking the arrow next to the preview video name and choosing a demo or one of your account videos/playlists (ideally one that includes the feature you want to test, like captions, dual screen, quizzes, or hotspots).
