About
In Kaltura’s Video Portal, each gallery has a privacy type that controls who can view and contribute content. Choosing the right privacy type helps you manage visibility and collaboration.
You can set a gallery’s privacy type when you create it, or later by editing its settings. Only users with the manager or admin role can change privacy settings.
Gallery privacy types
Galleries support three privacy options that determine who can access and contribute to them. Privacy settings are configured on the gallery edit page.
Gallery edit page showing privacy settings
- Open - Anyone can view content (including anonymous users) but only admin-role users and members can contribute content.
- Restricted - All logged-in users can view content but only members can contribute content.
- Private - Only members can view and contribute content.
Sub-galleries under a private gallery are visible only to members of those sub-galleries.
How privacy types and roles work together
Privacy types define who can access a gallery, while roles and permissions define what users can do once they have access.
For example, a user might have permission to upload content (based on their applicative role), but if the gallery is private and they’re not a member, they won’t see or access it.
For more information about user roles, see Gallery roles and permissions in the Video Portal.
Choosing the right privacy type
Use these guidelines to select the best privacy setting for your gallery:
- Open – For public-facing collections or training content meant for wide visibility.
- Restricted – For organization-wide access with controlled contributions.
- Private – For small groups, projects, or sensitive content.
