Captions and translations

Captions and translations enable content to be more accessible to a diverse and global audience.

Translations

Translations provide a translated text representation of the spoken language in a video. They incorporate time information so that they are presented in relative sync with the audio or video.

Captions

Captions provide a text representation of all essential audio in a video or sound recording, including non-speech sounds, music, and other information. Captions can be open captions (“stuck” on the video so they are always visible) or closed captions (users can turn captions on or off). They incorporate time information so that they are presented in relative sync with the audio or video.

Delivery of captions/translations

Live stream

Captions/translations for live sessions need to be delivered to Kaltura within the live stream by the broadcasting vendor.

Simulive/VOD

Captions/translations upload:

Recommended: Upload of SRT/VTT files via the metadata.

  • Ordering captions via integrations with 3rd party vendors.

  • Embedded in the video (not recommended because of limited display options and no possibility to turn them off)

Editing captions

The customer will be able to edit its SRT/VTT files within the Kaltura platform.

  • Clients may bring in their own vendor to create captions and translations.

  • Clients may upload SRT (caption) files by their own production/content teams and by the regional teams.

  • Clients may use Kaltura’s TransPerfect services for human captioning and captions alignment.
