Manage your device settings in a Kaltura Room in Canvas

About

The Set devices window allows you to configure and test your camera, microphone, and speakers before participating in a session.

This window appears automatically when you enter a Kaltura Room for the first time, when a room allows open stage access, or when you are invited to join the stage. It may also appear if your browser hasn't yet saved hardware permissions for that specific room.

In this window, you can verify your hardware connection, monitor audio levels, and customize your background to ensure a professional appearance.

Allow browser access

When entering the room for the first time, your browser may ask for permission to access your camera and microphone. If prompted, click Allow.

Browser permissions are saved per meeting link. You may see this prompt again if:

  • you join a different room
  • your browser permissions were reset
  • cookies or site settings were cleared

If you're having trouble accessing your camera or microphone, close other programs that might be using them, such as Zoom, Teams, or browser tabs with camera access.

Set your devices

The Set devices window offers several features to help you configure your hardware and optimize your presence before joining a session.

Viewing pane - Use this area to check your video feed. The white positioning lines help you center yourself; this is useful as your view may be cropped when multiple participants are on stage.

On mobile, your front-facing camera is selected automatically.

Audio meter - Speak to see the meter move. If you open this window before being invited to the stage, the meter remains disabled until you are granted stage access.

Background settings - Click this to blur your surroundings or upload a custom image.

Virtual backgrounds are not supported on mobile or on devices that don't meet minimum graphics requirements.

Device selection menus - Use these dropdowns to choose your specific webcam, microphone, and speakers.

Some mobile browsers (like Safari and Firefox) don't allow manual device selection.

Noise reduction - Toggle this on to filter background noise. This setting is saved for future sessions. Turn this off if you are using professional studio equipment or playing music.

Noise reduction is not supported on mobile.

Speaker test link - Click Test speakers to hear a sample sound. The text changes to Playing if successful. Chrome allows speaker selection via dropdown, while Firefox only provides the test link.

For the best experience, keep your phone in portrait orientation.

Set background

Personalize your meeting experience by choosing a background that suits your style.

  1. Click Background on the viewing pane to open the customization panel.
  2. The Background option may not appear if your device doesn't meet the minimum graphics requirements. For details on supported devices, see our article Kaltura Room recommended system requirements.

  3. Choose from Kaltura’s default images, blur effects, or one of your own images. If you haven’t uploaded any images, see Upload your own background below to learn how.
  4. The first time you select a background, it may take a few seconds to load.

  5. Click Background at the top left of the panel to return to the main screen.

Upload your own background

  1. Click Background
  2. In the customization panel, click Upload.
  3. Select an image from your computer. Images should have an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a minimum resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.
  4. You can upload up to three images at a time. To upload a new image after reaching the limit, delete an existing one by clicking X.

Uploaded images are displayed at the top of the list.

Uploaded images are saved in your browser’s local storage. If you switch browsers or clear your browser history, the images must be uploaded again.

Breakout rooms will inherit the custom image.

Mirror view

Toggle the mirror view to flip your camera feed for a more natural self-view.

This affects only your own view and does not change how other participants see you.

Join as viewer or on stage

If the room is in Interactive mode, you can choose how to enter:

  • Join as viewer - Enter the session with your microphone and camera disabled.
  • Join stage - Enter the main screen with your microphone, camera, or both enabled.
