Introduction to Kaltura's video quiz

About

Kaltura’s video quiz lets you add interactive questions directly into your videos to increase engagement and assess understanding.

Kaltura’s video quiz integrates with Content Hubs, the legacy Video Portal, LMS integrations, and other Kaltura applications. Powered by the Kaltura' v7 player, it provides a smooth and consistent experience across platforms and devices.

How a video quiz works

A video quiz lets you add multiple-choice, True/False, open-ended questions, and reflection points to a video.

Questions appear at specific points during playback, pausing the video so viewers can respond before continuing.

You can control:

  • Whether viewers can skip questions or replay sections
  • If hints or correct answers are shown
  • Whether users can retake the quiz

This interactivity helps measure comprehension, boost engagement, and collect data on viewing and learning effectiveness.

Example uses

  • Add questions to recorded lectures or training sessions to reinforce learning
  • Use quizzes in onboarding or compliance training to track completion and understanding
  • Embed quick knowledge checks in marketing or outreach videos to increase engagement
  • Link quiz questions to learning materials for instant feedback
  • Create lightweight certification or self-assessment tools

Add interactivity to your videos

By embedding questions directly into a video, Kaltura video quiz turns passive watching into active participation.

You can:

  • Check understanding as the video plays
  • Identify which concepts may need review
  • Measure the impact and effectiveness of your video content

You can also add quiz questions to YouTube entries uploaded through Kaltura. However, cue points, slides, and chapters aren’t available for YouTube-based quizzes.

Notes

  • A video can’t include both a quiz and hotspots at the same time.
  • The default session expiration for long videos is four hours (14,400 seconds). For videos longer than two hours, the session duration equals the video length multiplied by two.
  • For LMS video quiz users

  • Quizzes that are assigned through an LMS (such as Canvas) automatically sync grades to the LMS gradebook once submitted.
  • If a quiz is left open for several hours or days, the browser session may expire and grades may not sync. Advise students to complete their quiz in one sitting and avoid switching browsers or devices while taking it.
  • Quizzes that haven't been submitted can still be edited and saved. For quizzes that have already been submitted, only Save a Copy is available.
