Class Genie is an AI-powered knowledge assistant that helps users quickly find answers using their institution’s verified content.
You can interact with Class Genie by:
- Starting a live conversation with an avatar (if enabled)
- Typing a question in the Ask anything field
To enable the avatar experience for your Genie configuration, contact your Kaltura representative.
Class Genie builds responses using trusted sources such as captioned videos, documents (PDF, DOCX, PPTX), on-screen text (OCR), and content metadata. Genie respects user permissions, so each user only sees content they’re allowed to access.
When enabled by your institution, Genie can also appear on individual videos, allowing users to ask questions about the video they’re watching.
Core capabilities
- Live avatar interaction - Start a real-time conversation with the avatar (if enabled). The avatar responds using the same Genie intelligence and institution-specific knowledge as text-based interactions.
- Text and flashcard responses - Type a question in the Ask me anything field to receive answers as flashcards or structured text, depending on your selection or question type.
- Flexible response modes - Choose between Fast answer for quick insights or Detailed answer for deeper, more comprehensive responses.
- Unified conversation experience - Genie maintains context during your interaction, allowing you to ask follow-up questions without starting over.
- Interactive and shareable results - Open videos and documents directly from responses, view sources, share individual answers, and provide feedback.
- Secure, role-based access - Genie follows your existing permissions and only returns content users are authorized to access.
How Genie works
Type a question into the Ask me anything field. Genie searches your institution’s indexed content and generates a structured response.
Answers appear as flashcards or text, depending on your question, or you can choose the format using the answer format buttons.
Genie only pulls from content it has access to, including course materials hosted in your LMS. Because Genie respects user entitlements, the same question may return different results for different users based on their permissions.
User feedback helps improve answer quality and relevance within your organization’s environment.
Personalized responses
When you’re signed in, Genie can use basic information from your user profile, such as your first name, last name, bio, title, and more (depending on the admin configuration), to deliver more relevant results.
This information is used only within your institution’s environment and isn’t shared externally.
Genie speaks your language
Genie automatically detects the language of your question and replies in the same language when possible. It draws from multilingual content, prioritizing your institution's default language but using the most accurate sources available, even if they're in a different language.
Security and data privacy
Genie operates within your institution’s secure Kaltura environment:
- No external AI training – Genie never learns from or shares your institution's data externally.
- Role-based permissions – Users only receive results from content they have access to.
- Enterprise-grade security – Genie complies with strict security standards, including ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, and GDPR.
- Data encryption – All interactions are protected through industry-leading encryption protocols.

How Genie is set up
Genie is configured at the organizational level and is set up by your Kaltura representative. Administrators work with Kaltura to define content access and permissions.
Once set up, end-users can access Genie directly through their LMS platform.
