Roles and permissions for using live session engagement tools

About

Live sessions include engagement tools such as group chat, Q&A, private chat, polls, and reactions. Your role and assigned permissions determine which tools and moderation controls you can access.

Role names vary by Kaltura application, but they generally fall into three groups:

  • Participants and attendees
  • Speakers and presenters
  • Moderators

Each group can include roles with different permission levels. Exact capabilities depend on the application, session type, assigned permissions, and account configuration.

Participants and attendees

Users in participant and attendee roles can use the engagement features available during the session. Depending on the application and session configuration, they can:

  • Send and reply to group chat messages
  • Submit questions through Q&A
  • Use private chat (Kaltura Events only)
  • Respond to polls and other interactions
  • Use reactions

Participant and attendee roles don't include moderation or participant management permissions.

Speakers and presenters

Speaker and presenter capabilities vary by role and session type. In addition to participating in session activities, speakers and presenters can have access to tools such as:

  • Q&A – View and respond to participant questions.
  • Backchannel – Communicate privately with moderators and other speakers.
  • Interactions – Create and manage polls and other interactions, when permitted.

Some speaker and presenter roles have additional permissions and tools.

Moderators

Moderator capabilities depend on the moderator role and assigned permissions.

Depending on their role, moderators can:

  • Moderate chat and Q&A
  • Pin or delete messages
  • Block users from chat
  • Create and publish interactions
  • View real-time engagement information
  • Manage participants and session roles

Chat moderators

Chat moderators can manage chat interactions, including messages, Q&A, and polls. They can remove messages, answer or dismiss questions, and manage audience interactions, but they don't have the broader participant and room management capabilities of a Room moderator.

Room moderators

Room moderators can manage the live room experience, including moderating participants, controlling who can speak or present, and managing in-room interactions.

For information about assigning Chat moderator and Room moderator roles in Content Hubs, see Manage media roles and permissions in Content Hubs.
